This EF-hand domain is found towards the N-terminal end of human Stromal interaction molecule 1 (STIM1) and similar sequences. STIM1 acts as a Ca2+ sensor that gates two major inward rectifying Ca2+ channels at the plasma membrane: Ca2+ release -activated Ca2+ channels and arachidonate-regulated Ca2+ -selective channels. This domain adopts an all-alpha structure. Together with the SAM domain (Pfam:PF07647), it is essential for the regulation of the store-operated Ca2+ entry in response to diminished luminal Ca2+ levels.
