Superantigens cross-link major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II and T-cell receptor (TCR) molecules, resulting in an overstimulation of T-cells associated with a massive release of pyrogenic and inflammatory cytokines (PubMed:11163233, PubMed:9253413).
