DescriptionFlavin mononucleotide (FMN), also known as riboflavin 5'-phosphate, is one of the two major coenzymes derived from [riboflavin] (vitamin B2) and is one of the principal forms in which dietary riboflavin is found.[A274616,L54226] FMN is composed of an isoalloxazine ring - which serves as the active redox center - attached to a ribityl phosphate chain.[L54241] Alongside [flavin adenine dinucleotide] (FAD), for which it is a direct precursor, FMN plays critical roles in energy production, cellular function, and in the metabolism of fats, drugs, and steroids.[L54226] In addition to its systemic use as a means of riboflavin supplementation, a topical ophthalmic preparation of FMN was approved by the FDA in October 2025 for use as a photoenhancer in epithelium-on corneal collagen cross-linking.[L54281,L54221]

IndicationAdministered systemically, flavin mononucleotide is primarily indicated for the treatment of riboflavin deficiency in a variety of contexts (e.g. anemia).[L54226] It is also used off-label for the prophylaxis of migraine headaches.[L54226] A topical ophthalmic preparation of flavin mononucleotide, Epioxa, is indicated as a photoenhancer for use in epithelium-on corneal collagen cross-linking for the treatment of keratoconus in adults and pediatric patients aged 13 years and older.[L54221]
